Rohit Bal, a pioneer of Indian fashion design, has passed away at the age of 63 after a prolonged illness. The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) shared the news, honoring Bal as a transformative figure in Indian fashion who inspired countless designers and redefined the industry.
Bal, one of the first designers to make fashion a viable profession in India, initially gained fame in the 1990s with his iconic use of lotus and peacock motifs, luxurious fabrics like velvet and brocade, and a style that blended India’s cultural heritage with contemporary elegance. Known for his signature flair, he was celebrated not only in India but internationally, with his designs worn by Hollywood stars like Uma Thurman and supermodels Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, and Pamela Anderson.
Born in Srinagar, Kashmir, in 1961, Bal’s early years were influenced by the rich textile traditions of the region, igniting his passion for design. After completing his studies at Delhi’s St. Stephens College and the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), he launched his own label in 1990, which soon became synonymous with artistic luxury. He later opened multiple stores across India, the Middle East, and Europe.
Bal’s influence extended beyond couture; he endorsed products ranging from shoes to luxury watches and designed for major brands, including a prêt line for Jabong in 2014. His legacy includes designing uniforms for British Airways’ cabin crew and costumes for India's popular TV show Kaun Banega Crorepati.
Despite a break from the industry due to health concerns, Bal made a powerful return at India Fashion Week’s grand finale in October, where he appeared alongside his models, looking frail but elated. His recent appearance resonated with fans and fashion enthusiasts who have long admired his contributions to Indian fashion.
Rohit Bal’s work will be remembered for its timeless elegance and meticulous detail, marking him as a true icon who set new standards for the Indian fashion industry.
